The home that Ann lived in with her guardian’s family when they moved to Kentucky. It has a cave entrance in a basement
wall, which was used as a primitive refrigerator. It is located at 309 North Race Street in Glasgow, KY
the signatures of Thomas, Ann and Alexander all witnessing the contract. Thomas and Ann were then
married.
There are many unanswered questions in this chapter...like how did Ann and Thomas meet? Did they meet in
Virginia or Kentucky? What exactly do we know about Thomas Davison? The answer to this one is, “Very
little, actually.” We know that he came from Ireland, that he was a landowner as well as a slave owner, and
was well educated. We also know that he could quote scripture like a Holy Roller.
According to census records, it looks like Thomas and Ann had four children, but we only know the names of
three of them, Mariah, Herndon, and Washington. Herndon (our line) was born in 1812. They also raised one
of Alexander and Elizabeth’s grandsons when the child’s mother was declared insane and had to be
institutionalized. At various times Ann and Thomas also cared for other children in the family, including
Mariah’s two children, after her death.
I recently discovered a collection of letters from Thomas to Ann’s uncle Lawrence that span a period of thirteen
years, between 1820 and 1833. These letters give us a glimpse into their daily lives. It would be too long
