The Later Years
Dad retired from Stacie Manufacturing. Dad moved in with Frances and Clyde when they sold their
farm out in Williamsburg and moved back to Cincinnati. They got a house out on Stetson St. and
rd
they had a basement, a first floor, a second floor and a few rooms on the 3 floor and Dad had
those rooms on the third floor. He had access to the rest of the house but that is where he slept.
He basically lived there till they moved out to Mulberry.
I didn’t know how my dad would take retirement, but he took it pretty good because he could raise
a garden and he loved to do that. He’d raise a garden at Frances and Clyde’s’ and then he would
come up to our house and raise a garden there and then go to Bill’s house and raise a garden
there.
He enjoyed getting out and hunting. He liked to whittle. He liked to drink beer and talk. He had to
stop at every saloon, but not so much to drink as to see people and talk to them.
He sold a few vegetables and if he couldn’t sell them he gave them away. He didn’t care.
He always carried a pen and a tablet in his pocket, just like me. I guess it’s a family trait.
He usually wore bib overalls, but sometime he would dress up. He looked good when he dressed
up but he preferred to wear the bib overalls.
