Jim White & the Financial Institutions Practice
Jim White joined HKMB (Hunter Keilty Muntz & Beatty) in 2007. One year later,
HKMB was acquired by HUB (HUB Ontario). He started in the Directors &
Officers liability practice and eventually focused primarily on private equity
and venture capital firms.
He then became the CSO for HUB Ontario, and held that role for almost
seven years, but he was ready for a change, so he’s taking the new role of
Financial Institutions CSO. “I also thought that the region would benefit
from a fresh approach. I am confident Alan Hollingsworth, my replacement,
will do great things.”
Jim explained he’s excited to return to an industry segment, one he always found fast-
paced and complex. Building parts of this practice almost from scratch is exciting to me.
While working in the directors and officers liability practice at HUB, he grew a book of
private equity, venture capital firms, and other diversified financial firms.
So what can we expect to see under Jim’s leadership? He would like to expand the scope
of the practice around four discrete sub-verticals: Private Equity, Insurance Companies,
Banks & Lenders, and Diversified Financial firms, which include asset managers, investment
advisors, etc. “I would like to open up the black box that is financial services and show our
colleagues how to identify and approach prospects and influencers so that we can tell our
story in conjunction with our experts. I want to grow HUB to be the dominant player in the
mid-market financial industry.”
Jim explains HUB has an incredible potential opportunity to leverage its strong trading
relationships with our insurance company partners to write at least some part of their P&C
or EB insurance. “We have pockets of amazing talent in the private equity and M&A
transaction services space that we can coordinate and leverage our vast network of
expertise and relationships to drive more business. We have a great track record in asset
managers and investment advisors in certain parts of North America. I hope we can
leverage that experience and expertise to grow that segment beyond a small group of
experts.” He is also looking forward to working with Scott Eckerty who has led a successful
business in his banking and lending vertical.
“When I graduated from university, I explored three different fields of interest: investment
banking, law, and advertising. While it took me a long time to get to a role that
incorporates all 3, I think the specialty leader and CSO for financial institutions is about as
close to a perfect fit for my interests and experience as possible.”
