Scorers :- Proctor 37, Scadding 85
Yesterday we made the trip to Wellington always a tough place to go with their sloping pitch & small
dressing rooms and of course the infamous M5 traffic to contend with.
Again players were missing from last week Barwood (suspended), Edmondson & J Dunn both
unavailable. Perksy called up Knight, Saunders & Graydon from the Reserves but had Bath & Jones
back from holidays.
The game started with both sides being very cautious it looked like it could be a long day when left
back Saunders picked up a yellow after 3mins.
Our first chance fell to White who broke into the box but could only hit his shot straight at the keeper.
The home side were forcing the game getting numerous corners in quick succession. We made a
tactical change with Knight going into right back & White to the right hand side of midfield.
For all the pace & skill of Proctor & Brace up top they were both struggling with their back to goal as
the home defence coped with anything we tried quite easily. Our best chance seemed to be from our
left where Scadds was finding time but not getting the ball in the space required to get at their right
back and find decent balls into the box.
We looked more dangerous from the long throws of Saunders who was looking for White to flick on
and perhaps find a Bris player lurking.
On 28mins one of the home sides corners undone us. Somehow the ball made it to the back post
where Wellington player was left totally unmarked to fire the ball into the roof of the net. 1-0 and poor
defending from us as we should have dealt with it.
On 35mins we were forced into a change after Jones picked up a knock which he couldn’t shake off
and had to be replaced by Bath.
2mins later Bath won a free kick in a good position. Saunders put the ball in White flicked it on and
found Proctor in space to put ball in the net and make it 1-1.
We held out to HT to go in 1-1.
We knew we hadn’t played well but were still in the game.
The home side started the 2nd half in the front foot and hit the bar after 47mins. Heal was then called
on a couple occasions to make some good saves to prevent us going behind.
Our best chance fell to Brace who took an extra touch with the goal at his mercy. Scadds was still
finding Space on the left but couldn’t find the end product to find a Bris player in the box.
The central defensive pairing of Lewis & Dunn were working hard to ensure we didn’t go behind
making great tackles & throwing their bodies in the way of anything. Dunn deserves praise for how
well he coped with Wellington dangerman Jake Quick.
On 85mins a good ball from Proctor found Scadds on the left who was able to get away from his
marker get in to the box and slip the ball past the keeper to make it 2-1.
We knew we would be in for a tough 5mins if we were to hold on to our lead.
With only seconds remaining a ball to the back post found a Wellington player, it looked like he only
had to get it on target for the equaliser but either he didn’t realise what time he had or the last minute
intervention from Lewis seen the ball come back of the post.
The sound of the final whistle was a great relief to us. This was not a pretty or good performance from
us but we dug in for 90mins to get the win at a ground which is always difficult to play at. This was
our 4th win in 5 games and while we have played well in beating Bitton & Fleet we have proved we
can win the hard way as well.
Even with the amount of players missing we have proved we have a togetherness which can get us
through games when we need to.
