Sheffield & Hallamshire League (by Julian Barker)
Division One champions AFC Bentley had an anti-climatic end to their season when their
away game against Barnsley (Women’s) Development was postponed as the hosts
could not raise a team. The points will almost certainly be awarded to Bentley who were
favourites to end their league campaign unbeaten in games contested. At the moment the
League table reflects the game as postponed with Barnsley three points adrift in bottom
place after Middlewood Rovers recorded a 2-0 win over Socrates. Ashleigh Mills
netted both for Middlewood who recorded their first clean sheet of the season. Kiveton
Park started the day in fourth place, one position behind Brunsmeer Athletic and their
1-0 win over their visitors, secured by a goal from Chloe Dean, enabled Kiveton to trade
places and finish third.
An exciting finale to the Division Two title race saw Penistone Church crowned
champions when they won 7-1 at Swallownest who themselves had been in a quartet of
teams very much in with a shout of finishing top at the start of April. Both Keeley Green and
Courtney Wragg scored twice along with singles from Beth Ayrton, Jessica Barrow and
Danni Fletcher as Penistone secured the win which ensured they ended the season two
points clear of Mosborough. Emily Allen scored Swallownest’s consolation.
Mosborough’s title hopes had suffered an unexpected setback with defeat to Sheffield Utd
Community Development the previous midweek and while they recorded their biggest
win of the season in defeating Worsbrough Bridge Athletic 9-0, it was ultimately to no
avail as they needed Penistone to not win. Katie Flanagan bagged a hat-trick for
Mosborough whose other goals came from Sarah Buxton (2), Leah Kerr (2), Olivia
Chapman and Alice Maleham. Kerry Booth and Channy Rymer were the scorers for
Sheffield Utd Community Development as they won 2-0 against Mexborough Athletic,
who finish bottom.
Division Three champions Staveley Miners Welfare, who were bidding to win all
16 games, suffered a similar last day fate to AFC Bentley when their game against Kiveton
Park Res was postponed. The division’s other fixture ended in a 5-3 win for Charnock
Ridgeway over West End Terriers. Aaliyah Boreland bagged a hat-trick for Charnock
whose other goals came from Kerry Clifford and Tyra Morris-Grant. Rachel Norsworthy
scored all three for West End in reply.
Somerset League
Pen Mill are through to the Final of the League Cup after racing to a 10-0 victory over
Portishead Town Res in their semi final. The holders will have to wait and see who they
will defend the trophy against, Woodspring Women having reached the last four when
they defeated Wellington Wildcats on penalties after the teams had battled out a 3-3
draw. Woodspring will take on Paulton
