Manchester Utd returned to action on Friday night and came from
behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2, and put themselves six points ahead at
the top.
Rachel Daly continued her magnificent season by twice putting Villa
ahead during the first half, taking her league tally to 17 for the season. Leah
Galton equalised on the first occasion but Villa kept their lead until just
after the hour mark, when Nikita Parris levelled the scores once more. The
game looked to be heading for a draw until the third minute of injury time,
when Millie Turner grabbed a winner for United and a huge boost for their title challenge.
Manchester City were the next of the contenders in action on Sunday, and they also
came from behind when defeating Reading FC Women 4-1. Sanne Troelsgaard Nielsen had
given the Royals a perfect start with a goal in the opening minute but City responded through
Chloe Kelly and Khadija Shaw to lead at the interval. A goal two minutes into the second half
by Lauren Hemp strengthened the Cityzens’ grip on the game and they crowned the win when
Steph Houghton scored the fourth.
This left Chelsea needing a victory when they hosted Liverpool on Wednesday night
and they obliged with a 2-1 success, avenging their defeat to the Reds on the opening day.
Chelsea also needed to overcome an early setback when Emma Koivisto put Liverpool in front
but the Blues were back on level terms through Niamh Charles just ahead of half time and
Sam Kerr netted the winning goal with just four minutes remaining.
Leicester City meanwhile gave their survival hopes a huge shot in the arm on Sunday
with a 4-0 victory over Liverpool, which takes them out of the bottom two. Josie Green and
Carrie Jones gave Leicester a two-goal lead
inside the opening quarter of the game and after
Ashleigh Plumptre made it three early in the Aston Villa 2 (Daly 9,37)
second half, Missy Goodwin rounded off a fine Manchester Utd 3 (Galton 15, Parris 62, Turner 90)
