FA Women’s Championship

Although four of the teams in the FA Women’s Championship were involved in
the Vitality Women’s FA Cup on Sunday, three matches in the league did go
       ahead.
Leaders Liverpool were one of those teams
who were playing in the Cup but second placed
London City Lionesses were in action. A victory
would see them narrow the gap on the Reds to seven
points, whilst visitors Bristol City had the incentive
of replacing them in second if they were to beat them.
Things started well for City as they took the
lead just before the half hour, Abi Harrison scoring
from the penalty spot, but the Lionesses were back on
level terms just four minutes later when Lily Agg
equalised against her former club. City went back in
front early in the second half thanks to Aggie Beever-
Jones and Abbie Palmer then curled home the third via
a 25-yard free kick. Alli Murphy gave the home side
renewed hope when she pulled a goal back but City saw
the game out for a 3-2 victory, which takes them
into the top two for the first time this season.
            Crystal Palace travelled to
Sunderland on the back of two defeats and
looking to get their season back on course. A
solitary goal on the hour mark, scored by Molly-
Mae Sharpe, earned Palace a 1-0 win and they
moved back up to fifth place and only two points
       away from second.
At the other end of the table,
Blackburn Rovers picked up a crucial 1-0
victory against Lewes which takes them out of
the bottom three. Kayleigh McDonald scored
the only goal of the game for Rovers, who
needed to negotiate late pressure from the Blackburn Rovers 1 (McDonald 47)
Rookettes in order to bring an end to their run of Lewes 0
five league matches without a win. -
