Willie leaves Everton post
Everton have announced that Willie Kirk has left the role as manager after nearly three years
in the job.
The former Hibernian and Bristol City manager had led the club to the Vitality
Women’s FA Cup Final a year ago, where they went down to Manchester City after extra time.
They briefly led the FA WSL table at the start of last season before finishing in fifth place but
a tough start to this campaign has meant that they are currently eighth in the table, and his
last game in charge was a 3-0 defeat to league leaders Arsenal.
Prior to taking charge at Everton, Kirk had led Bristol City to promotion from WSL 2
in 2016, a year after they had been relegated from the top flight. He moved on two years later
to be assistant manager to Casey Stoney at the then newly formed Manchester United team,
before returning to management at Everton.
Everton have issued the following statement about his departure:
“Everton can confirm that Willie Kirk has left his position as manager of the Club’s Women’s
team.
The Club would like to thank Willie for his service and wish him well for the future.
Willie was appointed in December 2018 and has played a key role in the progress of
our Women’s team and structure, making the Club more competitive in the Barclays FA
WSL and reaching the 2020 FA Cup final.
Everton is aiming to have a new manager in post ahead of the Club’s next match
away to Leicester City in the Continental Cup on 3 November.”
FA Women’s Championship
Charlton Athletic’s hopes of going top of the FA Women’s
Championship for the first time were shattered as they were beaten 2-0 by
Lewes at the Dripping Pan on Sunday.
A win would have seen the Addicks replace Durham Women as
leaders but after a slow start to the game, it was Lewes who began to get on top and they took
the lead seven minutes before half time, when Paula Howells curled a shot past Eartha
Cumings. Before Charlton were able to recover, the Rookettes went two ahead as Heidi
Logan broke down the right and crossed for Amelia Hazard to sweep home.
Charlton tried to rally after the break but the home side defended well and they could
not get any closer than a Kiera Skeels effort which went wide after good work by Emma
Follis. In fact, Lewes could well have scored a third but Ini Umotong shot over the bar from
close range.
The win has taken Lewes up into the top Lewes 2 (Howells 38, Hazard 40)
half of the table, two points behind Charlton and Charlton Athletic 0
only five off the pace.
