Fleetwood Town Wrens Reserves are the Champions of the Lancashire County Women’s
League Premier Division after winning fifteen of their sixteen league matches during the
course of the season.
The team is managed by Emma Semple, with Kirsten Harris as Assistant Manager and
captain is Caz Wilcock. Emily McCarthy is leading scorer with 24 goals in just 16 appearances.
A run of twelve straight victories from the start of the season put Fleetwood in a
commanding position, including a double against third placed Colne FC Ladies. The run was
ended by title rivals Bury FC Foundation but Fleetwood rallied to win their three final
matches and gained revenge over Bury in the final game of the season, winning 4-2 to confirm
themselves as Champions by a margin of five points.
Fleetwood are also setting their sights on a second trophy and have reached the Final of
the Senior League Cup, where they will play Bolton Wanderers Res on 4th June.
“Each and every single player for the Reserves has played a huge role in securing the title
this season,” defender Sophie Richmond told Women’s Soccer Scene. “This title truly has
been two seasons in the making and with the ladies only being beaten once all season, I do
believe they are truly worthy champions.
“For our best performance, in terms of grit and determination, it was Stanwix away. This
was the first game of the season and after having close contests with Stanwix in the season
before, the ladies knew they had to turn up on the day and start the season right and that's
exactly what they did after asserting dominance throughout and winning 7-0. It set the bar
high from the beginning.
“As far as a footballing performance goes, Clitheroe away - this was a brilliant showcase
for the ladies to really show the high standard of football they can play. They played great
football throughout, across the whole pitch, taking the win with a 9-0 scoreline.
“Everything rested on the final game of the season, with Bury Ladies pushing us all the
way. We welcomed Bury to Poolfoot Farm and with us going 1-0 behind in the first half, we
had to dig in and show absolute character to come from behind not once but twice, to then
take control of the game and win 4-2, which also meant taking the title. The ladies showed
their true passion for the game in this match and the work rate and effort from all showed us
as the Champions.”
