Sheffield & Hallamshire League (by Julian Barker)
The Champions for both Division One and Three were finally confirmed at the weekend
with neither being a surprise given the respective records of AFC Bentley and Staveley
       Miners Welfare this season.
Bentley needed just a point (rather academic given their huge goal difference
advantage over the teams who could have drawn level on points) from their visit to
Kiveton Park where they recorded their biggest away win of the season, 8-0. The pair had
drawn 1-1 on the opening day of the season and Kiveton had conceded just five times in
their four home games beforehand but Gemma Harte was top individual scorer with four,
while the other goals were shared equally between Becky Kendell and Jenna McGee.
Bentley have been in high scoring form on their travels - this win took their away tally to
37 netting at least five in each game. Brunsmeer Athletic, who were 5-1 winners over
Middlewood Rovers, have a chance of finishing runners-up. They are currently fourth,
nine points adrift of second placed Chesterfield Women. Bradie Wild with a hat-trick
and Lucy Damms with a brace (including a penalty) provided their quintet of goals, with
Sam Hallam netting the consolation for Middlewood.
Handsworth Development moved two points clear at top of Division Two where
their 3-1 victory over Swallownest all but ended the latter’s outside title hopes. Maheen
Ahmed (2) and Emma Rowland were on target for Handsworth whose final game is the
return against Swallownest, for whom Brooke Chappell scored. Mosborough, who are
now second, have three games left including this Sunday’s crunch home fixture against
Penistone Church who a point behind. Penistone went into their home game against
Dronfield Town Res with a run of eight successive wins under their belts. A 2-1 interval
lead against their lowly opponents hinted that win number nine was on the cards, but
Dronfield upset the form book by winning 3-2, Summer Ingham’s hat-trick significantly
boosting their prospects of not finishing bottom.
Staveley clinched the Division Three title as they stretched their 100% league record
to fourteen games with a 7-2 victory against Mind Over Matter (for whom Jodie Stokes
netted both). Runners-up AFC Norton Woodseats extended their unbeaten home
record to seven games with a 2-1 win over Eckington Belles whose consolation goal came
from Lauren Tempest. Ebony Jade bagged a hat-trick with Melissa Bell and Nicola Grayson
the other scorers for West End Terriers who were 5-2 winners over Wickersley Youth.
       Somerset League
Banwell Ladies advanced to the Second Round of the League Cup with a 7-1 victory away
to Division Two North runners-up Highridge Utd. Lucy Mager netted two of the goals as
Banwell overcame potentially tricky opponents and she was joined on the scoresheet by
Nicki Robinson, Sarah Tedder, Madlyn Templemann, Vicky Wilson and Courtney James,
whilst the home side's consolation came
from Natalie Lewis. Paulton Rovers Res Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire
