Cushing to leave Man City
Manchester City Women's manager Nick Cushing will leave his current role at the start of
February to take up the post of assistant manager at New York City FC.
Having led City’s women’s team since its reformation in 2014, the 35-year-old has
enjoyed a silverware-laden tenure, guiding his side to six trophies in as many years with three
Continental Cup successes, two FA Cup triumphs and one FA Women’s Super League title.
Cushing also led the team to the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi finals in
consecutive seasons (2016-17 and 2017-18), and leaves the Cityzens competing on three
fronts during the remainder of the 2019-20 campaign.
His links with Manchester City go back as far as 2007. Having started out as a
schools coach, before joining the Academy’s coaching set up, Cushing’s professional journey
within the City Football Group now continues across the Atlantic.
In his new role, he will link up with MLS outfit New York City where he will work
alongside newly appointed head coach Ronny Deila.
His final game in charge will be the team’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League home
clash with Arsenal on Sunday 2nd February.
Following Cushing’s departure, current assistant manager Alan Mahon will take
charge of first team matters in the interim period, with former England men's Under-21s
coach Brian Eastick providing a supporting role, bringing with him over 30 years of
experience both on and off the pitch.
Brighouse complete amazing year
Brighouse Town, of the FA Women's National League Division One North, have completed a
remarkable 2019.
The West Yorkshire side have completed the incredible feat of remaining unbeaten in
open play in all competitions with the exception of a penalty shootout defeat to Derby County.
After 33 games, Town have won 23 and drawn 10, scoring an impressive 103 goals
and only conceding 25 along the way.
Brighouse finished last season by lifting the West Riding County Cup for the first time
in their short history after beating Guiseley 3-2 in the Final and finishing as runners-up
behind Burnley FC Women in the league.
That form has carried on in to the new season which has seen the team start strongly
in the league and cups, reaching the Third Round of the Women's FA Cup and the last sixteen
of the County Cup. They currently lie in third place in the league, behind leaders Barnsley and
Leeds Utd, but with games in hand on both of them.
Town's only blemish came in a League Cup penalty shootout defeat to National
League Northern Premier Division side Derby County after a 1-1 draw in extra time.
However, the first competitive match in the year 2020 actually ended in defeat as
they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Barnsley in the Third Round of the Women’s FA Cup.
Manager Rob Mitchell has an impressive overall record with the club after 200 games
in charge also, having won 144 and only suffering defeat on 30 occasions in all competitions
over a seven year spell.
"The prime objective now is to try and achieve promotion, but with only one side going
up from division one in a highly competitive league, that task has proven a little trickier to
overcome, finishing second in the previous two seasons," Rob Mitchell told Women's Soccer
Scene.
