England recorded a second huge victory in five days to leave themselves comfortably at
the top of their World Cup qualifying group.
The match was little more than a one-sided 'attack v defence' affair with goalkeeper
Mary Earps a virtual spectator all match and the only matter in question was how many
goals England would score on the night.
England were on the front foot from the start and Demi Stokes was almost played
in by a pass from Nikita Parris and it was not too long before they opened the scoring,
Lauren Hemp crossing for Ellen White to guide the ball past Lucie Schlimé at full stretch.
Five minutes later, Leah Williamson and Fran Kirby combined to set up White to
tuck home her second goal on the night and 43rd for England, leaving her three behind
record scorer Kelly Smith and maybe thoughts at that stage were turning to her catching
her in this match.
Luxembourg were working hard to try and keep England out of the area but after
failing to clear a Kirby corner, Nikita Parris was on hand to fire in the third goal. Another
corner led to England making it four, Alex Greenwood drilling home on the half volley.
The pattern of the game continued after the break and it took two minutes for
England to add to their tally. Greenwood, who was playing her 50th cap, marked the
occasion with a second goal, a deflected effort from outside the area.
Sarina Wiegman made a triple substitution on the hour and a minute later, they
went further ahead, Jessica Berscheid finding her own net when trying to clear. It was the
third time over the two matches that England had benefitted from an own goal.
England continued to push forward in search of more goals and the pressure on
Luxembourg told once again, Millie Bright guiding a Beth Mead free kick into the net to
register her first goal for her country, at the 41st attempt.
England were to find the net three more times in injury time, taking their total to
five over the two matches in the stoppage period. Bright netted a second goal after being
set up by Mead, then came an emotional moment when Rachel Daly got on the
scoresheet, after having recently lost her father. There was still time for Beth England to
join the goal spree and take the tally to double figures.
Next up for England will be a meeting with Northern Ireland at Wembley Stadium
on Saturday 23rd October, then they travel to take on Latvia three days earlier.
