THOUGHTS FROM
THE DUGOUT
Good afternoon all and welcome back to the South West Interiors Stadium for our FA Trophy match with
Bideford. May I welcome Sean Joyce, the Bideford staff, players, officials and supporters to Yate and
wish them a safe return journey.
First of all whilst welcoming our supporters back today may I apologise for our performance in our last
home match against Poole. I was embarrassed by the standard of our defending, if you can call it that,
and our play out of possession. As a team we had no pressure on the ball, we were far too far apart
and didn’t show anywhere near the required effort to get tight together and desire to defend. I have to
take responsibility for that as clearly the messages I had given the players weren't clear enough. Sitting
off with no pressure on the ball was not a plan we had going into that game but that is certainly the
way it looked from the sidelines. At Hartley Wintney on Tuesday we were better but looked a side a little
low on confidence. It was never a 3-1 game with us missing chances, having penalty appeals turned
down and with two errors in decision making leading to their first two goals. With the score at 2-1 we
threw men forward in the last 10 in an attempt to get a point and that
ultimately left the back door open and we conceded a third. October
was a wretched month and the decent league start has been
erased, we can't hide from the 5 defeats on the bounce. Today
you'll see us come out and work as hard as we can, if anyone
doesn't want to put a shift in and work their socks off the club then
they'll need to find another club as that's the minimum we require
now. We also need to come out and be brave, it's easy to get on
the ball and play when things are going well and you're in form as
an individual or a team. It's much harder when things are not
going well but we can't afford for players to hide now, we will see
today who has the character we need for the future.
Bideford are always hard working, Sean always has the team
well organised and no players will have time on the ball
today as Sean makes them fiercely competitive. I'm
looking forward to the challenge today and beyond
whilst more determined than ever to see what can
be created here. Keep coming, keep supporting us,
we recognise it's been tough, we'll make it worth
it. We can't go out and hire a Goalkeeping coach,
first team coach, performance analyst and have 6
people working on the details nor go out and offer
4 year contracts to players straight out of the
league but why would we want to! Where would
be the fun in that? If we could do that then we
could expect instant success but we can bring
immense success without that. But, developing
players from tiers below or young players out of
academies may take a little longer. This is the
challenge for everyone at the club, things off the
pitch are progressing really well, developments
around the ground, the commercial interests, and
the supporters turning up in number and now it's
time we match those efforts on the pitch, we can't
keep talking a good game we need to deliver one, or
hopefully many, week in, week out!
Up the Bluebells!
Paul
