Leicester City are just two points away from clinching the FA Women's
Championship title following their 2-0 victory against Coventry Utd.
Leicester took the lead on the stroke of half time, a quickly taken
corner was laid off to Natasha Flint on the edge of the area where she
drove home the opening goal. Flint went on to seal an eleventh straight league win for her
side on the hour with another clinical finish after being put through on goal.
Leicester had been further boosted by the news that second placed Durham
Women had been held to a 1-1 draw by Sheffield Utd. Both goals came either side of
the half hour mark, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk putting the Blades in front following good
work down the left by Maddy Cusack, but the Wildcats were back on terms three minutes
later, Ali Johnson marking her debut with a powerful left foot strike from just inside the
area.
Liverpool and Sheffield Utd had gone into the weekend with exactly the same
playing record from their 16 games and this remains the case after the Reds also drew 1-1
against Blackburn Rovers. Missy Bo Kearns gave Liverpool the lead before the break
with a well taken goal, skipping past two challenges before planting a firm shot inside the
corner of the net. Blackburn hit back strongly after the break and it was on-loan Everton
striker Elise Hughes who earned them a point, scoring from close range from Georgia
Walters' low cross.
Lewes are back in the top five after they won 2-1 over London Bees, who
remain at the foot of the table. The Rookettes went in front with only five minutes on the
clock, when the unfortunate Evie Gane deflected a corner into her own net, but the Bees
weathered the early pressure to bring themselves back on level terms as Sophie Quirk
curled home the equaliser. The winner for
Lewes came six minutes into the second half, a Durham Women 1 (Johnson 32)
Sheffield Utd 1 (Sweetman-Kirk 29)
cross-shot from out wide by Megan Mackey -
finding the far top corner. Lewes 2 (Gane og 5, Mackey 51)
London City Lionesses and London Bees 1 (Quirk 27)
Charlton Athletic battled out a goalless -
draw in their local derby which leaves the London City Lionesses 0
Charlton Athletic 0
Lionesses still in mid-table, whilst the Addicks -
edge closer to safety. Both teams had Leicester City 2 (Flint 45,60)
opportunities to score during the match but Coventry Utd 0
both defences remained solid to ensure the -
points were shared on the day. Liverpool 1 (Kearns 34)
Blackburn Rovers 1 (Hughes 60)
