On Wednesday evening, the Vitality Women’s FA Cup got
underway once again with the last remaining First Round tie
taking place.
Kent Football Utd took on Enfield Town in an all-
FAWNL Division One South East tie and although spectators were not permitted, the match
was streamed online with a total of 834 views.
Although Enfield started the game brightly at the Efes Stadium, it was Kent who
took a first half lead through a fine finish from Charlie Goad following a run from the halfway
line. Kent took their advantage going into the break but just before the hour, Enfield were
back on level terms as Beau Parker’s shot hit the bar and Amy Makewell scored from the
rebound.
The game remained tightly contested and neither side could conjure up a winner
before the ninety minutes were up. Extra time was probably the last thing either team wanted
having not played for almost four months, and they could still not be separated during the
extra half hour, and it was Kent who triumphed 4-3 from the resulting penalty shootout.
Both teams deserve great credit for producing a fine game having not played for so
long. Kent, who have reached the Second Round for the first time, will now be away to
Chichester & Selsey this Sunday.
Charlton Athletic are delighted to confirm the appointment of
Karen Hills as Head Coach of the club’s Women’s team.
Hills, who had a successful playing career at Charlton
between 2001 and 2007, will lead the club in preparing to go
full time from July.
The 45-year-old played a key role in the growth of
Tottenham Hotspur’s women’s team, managing the club
between 2009 and 2020. During that period Hills presided
over a series of promotions as the club moved from a
completely amateur side to a full-time professional outfit
playing in the English football’s top tier.
Owner Thomas Sandgaard told the club’s website: “I am
delighted we have been able to appoint someone of Karen’s
experience and pedigree. She has a great history with our club
from her playing days and managed the transition to full time
at Tottenham Hotspur excellently. Our ambition is for Charlton
to be challenging in that top tier of the FA Women’s Super League and I am looking forward
to watching the team grow.”
Hills explained she was delighted to get the opportunity to Charlton. She said: “I am
looking forward to adding my experience and knowledge to what is already a great staff and
a fantastic group of players here are the group. We are looking to build something special
with Charlton and I can’t wait to get started.”
Sandgaard added: “Charlton were one of the leading clubs in football in Karen’s
playing days and that is where we want to get back to. Going full-time and the appointment
of Karen are two real statements of intent as we look to move the team forwards.”
The current Charlton Athletic Women’s coaching staff, led by Riteesh Mishra,
remains in place and Hills met the first team last Tuesday evening ahead of her first training
session with the club.
