Match Report
A GOOD WEEK FOR ASHTON & BACKWELL UTD.
On a very hot and humid Wednesday evening the Stags made the short trip to
Clevedon, with is a very happy hunting ground with 2 victories last season. It
was a credit that both sides managed to produce an entertaining and
competitive given the conditions. Ethan Feltam’s close range shot gave the
Hosts the lead on 17 minutes but that only lasted 10 minutes. Jamie White’s
direct free kick unluckily hit the cross bar , bounced out to Wil Solari who
scored his 1 goal for the 1 team, coolly slotting home with his left foot from
st
st
12 yards. Both sides had chances, with Backwell probably having the better of
the 1 45 minutes, the sides went into the break level.
st
Clevedon’s Eliot Nicholson tested Lewis Coombes from 30 yards and had to tip
the effort over the bar. On 66 minutes A & B Substitute Joe Cattermole, who
made a great impact on the game, sent a deep right wing cross which found
Solari. His header back across goal allowed Miles Hardidge to score from close
range. However the lead didn’t last 2 minutes, as another substitute influenced
the game as Henry Westlake found the impressive youngster Freddie King who
curled his shot into the top corner.2-2. Ferris and Eastwood should have done
better with their opportunities as the game seemed to be heading for a draw.
In injury time Eastwood handled, the ref didn’t hesitate and pointed to the
spot. Cattermole stepped up and his well struck kick beat the diving Smith. 3
points to Ashton & Backwell.
Ashton & Backwell then picked up another point on Saturday with promotion
hopefuls Mousehole who made the370 mile round trip to the Lancer Scott
stadium. A & B picked up 4 points last season against a side who finished 3 rd
from top and were going for the title until they dropped 2 points against us on
easter Monday.
Mousehole, who have a reputation as one of the best footballing/passing sides
in the league, knew what to expect from Backwell, even in the 35degree heat,
a very hard working and organised performance. The hosts were definitely the
better side in the 1 half, as will Solari particularly created a lot opportunities
st
down the left hand side. 3-1 at half time would have fairly reflected the
chances and run of play but 0-0 at the break.
Mousehole then upped their game and immediately forced the save of the
game as Lewis Coombes dived at full stretch to tip over Reece Thompson’s goal
bound header. Mousehole did get the ball in the net but didn’t count due to
offside. Watkins, Ferguson and Hill all went close for the visitor’s but Backwell
survived the pressure with some excellent defending from their backline and
skipper Conor Saunders who was impressive all day at both ends of the pitch.
Then countered as Cattermole, Price and Moore all had chances to claim a late
winner. 0-0. M.O.M Connor Saunders.
