OPENING DAY REVIEW

The opening day of the 2021/22 Pitching In Southern Football League Premier
Division South season saw three goalless draws and a bit of a shock for one of the
       bookmakers` favourites for promotion.
Truro City are fancied to do well this season but were handed a shock at their
temporary Bolitho Park home by Hendon. The Greens have suffered a number of
injuries in recent days and manager Lee Allinson was busy signing late recruits,
but it was one of his early close season signings, Wilson Carvalho, who put his
side in front after 11 minutes. And then the visitors hit the White Tigers with three
goals in six minutes after the hour-mark through Lucas Perry, Carvalho again and
       another new boy, Jayden Clarke.
There were no goals at Imber Court between Metropolitan Police and
Salisbury, at The Ian Moorcroft Stadium between Tiverton Town and
Chesham United or at the Easy As HGV Stadium where Farnborough
       welcomed Walton Casuals.
However, there were seven goals at Privett Park as Gosport Borough grabbed
a late, late win against Poole Town. A thrilling game for the 429 fans began with
Bradley Tarbuck giving Boro a 7th minute lead. And they doubled their advantage
through Theo Lewis after 19 minutes.Tony Lee managed to reduce the deficit in
the 24th minute to leave the scoreline 2-1 to the hosts at the break. New signing
Jack Dickson pulled the Dolphins back on level terms on the hour-mark and then
Lee netted his second in the 84th minute to put Poole in front for the first time in
the game. However, two minutes into stoppage time, Dan Wooden seemingly
earned Gosport a point when he made it 3-3, only for Tarbuck to go and grab a
winner for the hosts in the 97th minute.
Fancied Taunton Town started well with a 4-1 win at New Cuthbury in front of
a good crowd of 595 against Wimborne Town. Lewis Beale gave the Magpies a
21st minute lead that Jared Lewington cancelled out after 39 minutes. The
Peacocks took a lead into half-time when Toby Holmes converted an injury-time
penalty. Lewington made it 3-1 to the visitors in the 68th minute and new boy
Jack Veale added a fourth after 72 minutes.
A crowd of 593 were at The Met Coaches Community Stadium to see Merthyr
Town’s return to league football against Hartley Wintney. But it could hardly
have begun worse for the Martyrs when Kingsley Eshun put The Row in front
virtually straight after kick-off. Returning favourite Ian Traylor equalised in the
13th minute, only for one of the visitors` new arrivals, Jacques Kpohomouh, to
restore their advantage 7 minutes after half-time. But another new boy, Frazer
Thomas, popped up to salvage a point for the hosts 20 minutes from time.
King’s Langley return to the south section began with defeat as Sam Avery`s
70th minute effort eventually earned Weston-super-Mare all three points at
       The Orbital Fasteners Stadium.
Aaron Minhas gave Beaconsfield Town a 13th minute lead at the Avenue
Stadium against Dorchester Town. Tiago Sa pulled the Magpies quickly back on
terms 3 minutes later, and a draw looked likely until Ollie McCoy won it for the
Rams in the first minute of time added on at the end of the game – and seconds
after Sa had hit the post at the other end!
Ricardo Rees enjoyed a good start to his campaign as his brace helped Yate
Town to a good 2-1 win at Earlsmead against Harrow Borough. Rees broke the
deadlock on the hour-mark to give the Bluebells a lead which David Taylor
cancelled out nine minutes later. But the former Bristol City man scored what
proved to be the winner just three minutes later.
