The History of Tavistock A.F.C. Cont…

In 1952, Tavistock joined the South Western League but were forced to withdraw
in 1961 due to financial embarrassment until re-joining in 1968.

The club has been the birthplace of many players going on to enjoy professional
pay-days in the Football League including Harold Redmond and Danny Sullivan to
Crystal Palace for a fee of £100; Neil and Peter Langman to Plymouth Argyle and
Mike Trebilcock, perhaps the most newsworthy footballer to have played for
Tavistock. He scored two of the three goals in the 1966 FA Cup Final for Everton
in their 3–2 win over Sheffield Wednesday. Robbie Pethick, Tavistock-born and ex-
player of the club, signed professional forms for Portsmouth in October 1993,
where he had five successful seasons before moving to Bristol Rovers.

The club won the Devon Premier Cup in season 2001-02 and repeated this success
in season 2006-07, by beating Upton Athletic 6-0, creating a record winning margin
in the final of this competition.

In season 2005-06, the club reached the last 32 in the FA Vase, going out to
Pickering Town in a very close encounter. The club also entered the FA Cup for the
       first time since 1953-54.

Perhaps the saddest entry in this brief history of football in Tavistock is the fire of
February 3, 2011, which all but saw the complete destruction of the changing
rooms and the Red & Black clubhouse. Since then, a rebuilding programme under
the guidance of manager Stuart Henderson, has seen the club rise from the ashes
and achieve great things by becoming the SWPL East Divisions Champions in
2014/15 and then SWPL Premier Division Champions in 2016/17. Tavistock AFC
also made SWPL history the following year by becoming the first club to win both
the SWPL Charity Vase and Bowl.
Success has continued and after being runners-up to Plymouth Parkway in the
SWPL Premier Division for the 2017-18 season, the Lambs won the league on the
last day of the 2018/19 season, beating Plymouth Argyle reserves to gain
promotion to the Toolstation Western League.
Our first two seasons in the Western League saw the club top of the table in
2019/20 when the season was curtailed due to Covid and then second when the
2020/21 season was also curtailed, missing out on promotion on a points-per-game
basis over those two seasons. However, despite having a smaller budget compared
to many of our rivals, the Lambs were crowned champions of the Western League
in 2022 with a final day win over Ashton & Backwell seeing us pip Exmouth Town
       to the title.

Our first season at Southern League level - the 2022/23 campaign - saw us finish
a very credible sixth, in Division One South, missing out on the play-offs on the last
day of the season. Striker Liam Prynn’s 28 league goals won him the league’s top
goalscorer award, though, but with a strong foundation laid, the hope is the club
can continue to develop and thrive at the heart of its community on the edge of
       Dartrmoor.
