League Review
In the Pitching In Southern League Division One South, leaders Wimborne
Town were pushed all of the way in their trip to Malvern Town.
The home side had Joe Bullock sent off with just nine minutes on the clock but
proved tough opposition for the Dorset outfit who edged ahead through Jack Lovell
on 64 minutes. Parity was restored soon afterwards through Jordan Annear before
Harry Baker popped up with a late winner.
Second-place Frome Town notched two second half goals to see off the challenge
of Yate Town and maintain their impressive home record. The impressive James
Ollis set them on their way before Roy Simpson made the points safe late on.
The top two have been able to extend their advantage over Cribbs who endured
a miserable weekend as firstly they went down 3-1 at neighbours, Bristol Manor
Farm on Friday evening before manager, Richard Luffman, stepped down on
Saturday morning.
In front of a crowd of over 500, three goals in an eight-minute spell midway
through the first half from Jayden Nielsen, who hit two, and George Kellow put
Bristol Manor Farm well in command and although Bailey Croome gave the visitors
hope at the start of the second half, they were well beaten by a side that sit fourth.
Things are just as interesting at the bottom, with one relegation place up for grabs.
Exmouth Town were victorious against Melksham Town as they secured a 2-1
triumph. Ben Steer set them on their way and although Benjani Mwaruwari sent
the teams in level at the break, Joe Belsten got what proved to be the winner on
the hour-mark.
There was drama aplenty at Paulton Rovers as they shared eight goals with
Bemerton Heath Harlequins. A quickfire brace from Ed Butcher put the home
side in control only for Remus Nixon to reduce the arrears on the stroke of half-
time. Dan Young and another from Nixon put the visitors in front just past the hour
and that’s how it stayed until a frantic final five minutes.
Dan Cottle was able to equalise before Nixon completed his hat-trick in stoppage
time to put the visitors back in front. There was still time for Nick Hewlett to flick
home to ensure that it ended with the spoils shared at 4-4.
There was a big win for Bashley in their quest to move away from danger near
the bottom as goals from Jamie Webber and Frankie Monk gave them a 2-0 success
over Mousehole.
The day’s other games finished goalless as Bishop’s Cleeve and Willand Rovers
couldn’t be separated, and neither could Westbury United and Bideford.
The wet weather forced the postponement of Tavistock’s home encounter with
Larkhall Athletic.
