Good afternoon all and a warm welcome to the
players , officials and supporters of Helston Athletic
to the AJN Stadium. I hope that they had a good
trip up from deepest Cornwall and we wish them a
safe journey home later today. Like us, Helston
have made an impressive start to this season and
we know very well that they will prove to be stern
opposition this afternoon. Can I also welcome the
match officials today, referee Mark Loughlin
and his two assistants Alex Setchell and Mark
Oswin.
These are my first notes since we kicked a ball in
earnest this season and what a flyer we have
managed to get off to! Back to back victories
against Ashton & Backwell and local rivals
Brislington gave us the perfect start to the
season. The football that we played at Brislington
was of the highest quality and was certainly up there with the most memorable that
I can recall in my time at the club.
On Wednesday we made the short trip to Cadbury Heath and came away with the
3 points after coming from behind, showing real character in a very tough scrap of
a game. It was great to see and hear so many of our supporters there. Thank you
for your ongoing support, it is much appreciated by the lads and all concerned at
the club.
Sandwiched in between this was the lengthy trip to Tring Athletic in the extra
preliminary round of the FA Cup. Sadly our FA Cup woes continued in a 3-0 reverse.
It could have been all been so different. We were the better side for the first 25
minutes or so but were unable to make it count. Shortly after conceding a fairly soft
goal after the break Gristy was shown a red for a challenge which most people in
the ground , apart from the key one, did not even regard as a foul and Tring netted
from the resulting penalty. There was no way back and sadly it was just not our
day.
Believe me we are under no illusions , this is just the start of a long season in a
very tough competitive league. Let`s enjoy our great start and hopefully we can
keep this going today in what is sure to be an entertaining encounter. Enjoy the
