Congratulations to Leicester City who have secured the FA Women's
Championship title with a 2-0 victory over London City Lionesses on
Sunday and will play in the Barclays FA WSL next season for the first time
in their history.
Jonathan Morgan’s side went into the game knowing that a win would put them
beyond the reach of second placed Durham Women, who did not have a game.
Leicester needed to be patient against a well organised Lionesses side, but a chance
came on 33 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. The kick had been awarded against
Lionesses goalkeeper Shae Yanez but she was to make amends, saving from Charlie Devlin.
The game remained goalless until midway through the second half, when Sam Tierney fired
home a rebound after her original shot had been blocked. Leading scorer Natasha Flint
made the points safe seven minutes later as she volleyed in from close range.
Durham need to win one of their remaining two games to take the runners-up spot
but the two chasing teams still have a mathematical chance. After they sported identical
records going into their matches, Sheffield Utd are now third after winning 3-0 away to
Crystal Palace. Katie Wilkinson gave the Blades a seventeenth minute lead, with Rebecca
Rayner adding a second on the half hour. Wilkinson rounded off the scoring in the second
half with her eighteenth league goal of the season.
The result actually took United above Liverpool after they had beaten Lewes 2-0
earlier in the day. The Rookettes approached the match in good form but found themselves
a goal behind after seven minutes, the unfortunate Nicola Cousins heading a corner into
her own net. A quickly taken free kick led the Liverpool’s second after the break, Ashley
Hodson crossing for Meikayla Moore to head firmly home.
