After last week’s FAW Women’s Cup action it was back to the league this week with Round 8 of Phase
1 in the top flight and it was a full on afternoon across the league.
Aberystwyth Town hosted Abergavenny Women, who started the day in the bottom two
places with both aiming to add points to the board to start to close the gap to the mid-table.
Aberystwyth struck first, Shauna Chambers getting her first goal of the season, heading in an Emily
Thomas cross for the only goal in the first half. Thomas was again the provider for Aberystwyth’s
second, this time Gwenllian Jones putting away the cross, also opening her account for the season.
Abergavenny stuck back just three minutes later, Alana Murphy getting the visitors a foothold back
in the game at 2-1 but Thomas wasn’t finished, this time providing Libby Isaac with ten minutes to
go. Jones also had a taste for goal and added her second in the 83rd minute to confirm the points for
the Seasiders, the game ending 4-1.
Barry Town Utd faced The New Saints at Jenner Park, with TNS hoping to turn the tables
on Barry who won 3-1 in their opening game of the season. Against the early run of play, it was the
visitors who opened the scoring with Emily Ridge’s close range shot from Chantelle Teare and twenty
minutes later, Ridge doubled their lead. Lauren Harris pulled one back for Barry just before half
time, followed up with Manon Pierce’s effort to level the score with just under half an hour to go.
Ridge wasn’t finished however and got her hat-trick to make it 3-2 and take the three points back
north, to see TNS leapfrog the hosts on goal difference.
At the top half of the table, Cardiff Met Women hosted Swansea City with both hoping to
close the gap to Cardiff City. As ever with these sides it was a close fought game with both sides
creating chances before the Archers took the lead, Sophie Hancock converting from a corner.
Swansea wasted no time replying with Nieve Jenkins putting away a Stacey John-Davies cross just
three minutes later. Despite a host of chances, neither side was able to convert and it finished all
       square at 1-1.
In the late game, Pontypridd Utd hosted Cardiff City Women; the earlier results meant
that a win for Ponty would move them to just two points behind third place while the Bluebirds could
extend their lead to five points. It was end to end action in the first half and it took until five minutes
before the break for Megan Bowen to put the league leaders in front. The game continued in the same
vein and just as it looked like Cardiff were
                                                                         F
