Macca sinks Wells to secure win no.22 for the Foxes
25 March 2023|Match Reports
A er a week of perpetual rain, and a difficult midweek win against Keynsham Town, league
leaders Brislington got the nod at 9:30 to say that their top of the league clash with
long me Toolsta on division 1 leaders Wells City was on; and a trip south to the athle c
ground beckoned, as many of other non league games were cancelled.
The e offered a chance for Lee Perks’s ‘Galac cos’ to go 8 points clear of their nearest
rivals with a game in hand, but a loss threatened the Foxes 21 game winning run and would
bring Wells back to within two points, and possibly deliver the unse ling blow that may
derail the seemingly unstoppable force that the Foxes have become.
Wells having drawn away to Radstock in midweek probably needed to take all three points
if they were to remain in the hunt for the tle!!
Asa White, Joe McLennan Josh Egan, Harry Tobin, Jordan Me ers and George Jones all
returned to the squad.
With Ben Tucker & Oaklan Buck missing Danny Doddimead moved to the right of a ack,
Danny Barwood took up his usual central defensive role and Asa White came in at right
back, with McLennan and Tobin retaking their familiar posi ons on the le .
The pitch looked surprisingly good on the eye given the week’s weather, however on closer
inspec on the so top layer had suffered from an inability to be rolled and quickly cut up
as the game began making it difficult to pass and control with confidence.
Wells made the early running with their front 3 looking lively, and showed why they have
been such tle contenders all season by compe ng in all areas and forcing an early corner
and throw ins in the final third, however these were repelled by the Brislington defence
who were resolute and pu ng bodies on the line where needed.
With the pitch making any fluid football difficult, both teams were guilty of Mishit passes
and overrunning the ball, but as the game progressed it was the league leaders who
started to make hay and dominate.
McLennan and Doddimead were threatening on each flank and it was the former who had
the foxes first good chance, hi ng the post a er a one two with Dunn following his
penetra ng run in from the le .
This was closely followed by White having his shot blocked following another Dunn
pullback a er a corner from the le wasn’t cleared by the home side. On 17 minutes
Scaddings effort from distance was pped over by Creed a er good work from
Doddimead.
Three minutes later it was Doddimead who worked his own space on the right his effort
going just wide of the near post, at this point Brislington we’re firmly in control and it was
pre y much one way traffic. Four minutes later it was Griffiths with a golden opportunity
to extend the lead, Dunn again worked the opportunity inside the six yard box, Griffiths
swivel and shot heading over the bar. Shortly a er Ricke s a empt from distance flew
narrowly wide.
On 33 minutes, Brislington finally broke the deadlock. Doddimead’s solo work a er a
Me ers pass was saved well by the keepers foot only for McLennan to swoop in to finish
low to his near post.
No more than what they’d deserved, and fi ng for McLennan who’d been receiving some
‘rough treatment’ from the home defenders.
The a acks were relentless from the visitors but they couldn’t find another breakthrough
before the break with Wells largely on the back-foot Dorrington was having a rela vely
