Swansea City have successfully retained the Orchard Welsh Premier
Women's League title and completed a league and cup double after
picking up the result they needed in their final match of the season
against Abergavenny Women.
Colin Staples' side required a point in order to ensure finishing
above Cardiff Met Women but found themselves frustrated by a
determined Abergavenny side who needed to avoid defeat themselves to
take fourth place ahead of Port Talbot Town.
The first half was largely a tightly contested one with the Swans
having narrowly the better of matters but with Abergavenny defending
extremely well, and well led by Ceri Hudson, they found it difficult to create any clear cut chances.
Kelly Adams tried her luck from distance with an effort which flew straight at Zara Pernalete in
the Abergavenny goal, and Stacey John-Davis was unable to direct a near post header on target
from a Katy Hosford cross.
Half time came with the scoreline goalless and the pattern of the match continued after
the break with Swansea dictating possession but still being unable to pierce Aber's back line.
However the chance arrived five minutes after the restart, when Laura Davies was brought down
in the area and a penalty was awarded. Emma Beynon stepped up to take but Pernalete pulled off
a fine save to keep her side on level terms.
Swansea continued to press for the goal they craved but Abergavenny, to their huge credit,
were in no mood to be beaten. Chivers drilled a powerful strike just over the bar and Megan Jones
cleared a Shaunna Jenkins header off the line to give themselves a hard earned point whilst
Swansea were able to start celebrations once the final whistle blew.
