League Review
Late goals are the order of the day
Last Saturday was a good day for Chesham United at the top of the Pitching In
Southern League Premier South table.
They went to Winchester City and came home commanding 3-0 victors thanks
to a first half strike from leading scorer Ricardo German and second half goals from
Callum Adebiyi and Ogochukwu Obi.
Not only that, but second-placed Salisbury were hit by a stoppage time goal at
Bracknell Town as they went down 2-1. It was Joseph Grant who put the home
side ahead in the first half only for Daniel Fitchett to level early in the second
period. The winner came from Anthony Cheshire.
Gosport Borough are now level on points with Merthyr Town after they beat
their Welsh opponents 2-1 in our Star Game. It was the visitors who drew first
blood when Thomas Handley fired them ahead on the quarter-hour mark. But
Gerson Da Costa Ramos restored parity on the hour-mark before Dan Wooden
turned the scoreline on its head with nine minutes remaining.
Another late goal came at Swindon Supermarine where AFC Totton were
denied all three points by the returning Harry Williams’ equalising goal to make it
2-2. Juan Luque Prados gave the visitors an early lead only for Joseph Tumelty to
level at the start of the second period. Prados put his side back in front and it was
a lead that they were able to hold until right at the death.
Hungerford Town failed to take advantage as they succumbed at Hayes &
Yeading United where there was more late drama. Things were going well for the
visitors when Conor McDongh put them ahead on the stroke of half-time. Ronan
Silva levelled just over ten minutes into the second period before Great Evans put
the visitors back in front. Within minutes, the returning Mo Bettamer had made it
2-2 before Silva popped up in the second minute of stoppage time to give his side
a vital three points.
An impressive performance from Hanwell Town saw them run out 3-0 winners
away at Poole Town. Jacob Bancroft wasted little time in putting them ahead on
five minutes and that lead was doubled with barely ten minutes played when Daniel
Carr drove home. Bancroft completed the scoring towards the end.
Also securing a nice away win was Basingstoke Town as Liam Ferdinand and
Michael Atkinson got their goals on a 2-1 triumph at Walton & Hersham, for
whom a goal from Trae Cook-Appiah was sandwiched in between.
There were two stoppage time goals at Hendon, where they went down to a 3-2
home reverse at the hands of Tiverton Town. Josh Jones put the Devon club
ahead but less than ten minutes later, Billy Leonard had equalised. Jack Rice-
Lethaby put the visitors back ahead on the stroke of half-time before the same
player added a third goals for his side midway through stoppage time. There was
still time for Finlay MacNab to pull another goal back.
A Will Fletcher goal proved to be the difference as Dorchester Town won 1-0 at
Didcot Town, whilst the day’s other game ended goalless between Sholing and
Beaconsfield Town.
The Plymouth Parkway v Harrow Borough clash was postponed.
