P. 22
Bris v Warminster Town
The second half was more of the same, Brislington having the lion's share of the ball, the
team pushing forward threatening the hosts' goal, the home side relying on the rare
counter-a acking opportuni es.
Jordan Williams was first to have a go, the keeper ge ng down well to keep his effort out,
with other Foxes players looking for the spills, then Ricke s' shot from outside the box
looked to stop dead at the keeper's feet (possibly with some help from the sandy puddle).
The players were looking leggy on the heavy surface, and McClennan, playing his first game
in three, was replaced by Conor Bryant who slipped in to right back, allowing Smith to
return to his favoured central midfield role.
Given the condi ons, the Foxes were passing the ball well, and the long passages of
possession, although not penetra ve, were keeping the home side chasing. Much of the
the Warminster possession was coming from restarts a er shots from distance or slightly
misjudged through balls, however they were rarely able to retain the ball for any sustained
period.
Warminster had an opportunity to threaten with a free kick half way into Brislington's half
a er Asa White's foul, but the cross, although into a dangerous area, had no one
challenging and the visitors were able to see the ball out.
A straight ball from deep found a Warminster front man whose first- me effort from the
corner of the 18 yard box clipped the bar, the Foxes' subsequent clearance then set
Griffiths racing away at the other end, his shot blocked by some last-ditch defending.
Other half chances came and went, Scadding and Dodimead chancing their luck from
distance.
However, the game was pre y much finished when Josh Egan, who'd replaced Scadding,
found Fillingham's run as he slipped between two defenders leaving him one on one.
Fillingham was tripped outside of the box by the Warminster centre half, leaving the ref no
op on but to produce a red card.
Fillingham then looked to have scored from the resul ng free kick, a er Egan's low shot
went below the jumping wall (which the referee, for some reason, counted back eight
paces twice). The keeper managed to save but only parried out for the Foxes' forward, who
li ed the ball into the roof of the net, only to be denied by the linesman.
Fillingham then made way for Oaklan Buck who'd scored both goals in last season's hard-
earned 2-0 win at Weymouth Street. Buck was only denied by a last-ditch tackle as he
raced on to a pinpoint through ball from Jordan Williams, the defender nicking the ball
from the pacey forward as he was about to shoot, with no margin for error. Buck wasn't to
be denied though, a forward ball from Griffiths was misjudged by a Warminster defender,
and Buck pounced to finish, doing so with his right foot into the bo om corner.
With seconds le a lovely move and de pass with the outside of his right boot from
Griffiths sent Ricke s clear, but his effort was thwarted by the same defender who'd made
that last ditch tackle on Buck, again saving the day for the hosts with a tackle that, again,
had no margin for error!
However the tackle proved to be in vain, as the subsequent low Egan corner somehow
evaded everyone at the near post and was turned in by skipper Asa White who'd med his
run to perfec on, arriving to tap in on the goal line to make it four.
This was also met by the referee's final whistle. Although the goals were late coming, the
win was well deserved a er domina ng the game from start to finish.
The Foxes now have a well-deserved 10-day rest un l they meet Cadbury Heath, away in
the Toolsta on Western League fixture on Saturday 28th of October.
Man of The Match: Danny Doddimead, relentless work on both direc ons and a great goal
to boot.
