The Barclays WSL returned to action over the weekend and the winning
run of Arsenal came to an end as two late goals saw them go down 3-2
to Manchester Utd.
In front of more than 40,000 at the Emirates Stadium, United took
the lead through Ella Toone just before half time but Arsenal came
roaring back after the break to lead through Frida Maanum and Laura
Wienroither. Millie Turner levelled matters with five minutes remaining
and in injury time, Alessia Russo sealed a superb victory for United which
takes them back level on points with the Gunners, who stay ahead of them on goal difference.
This allowed Chelsea the chance to go top for the first time this season when they
hosted Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge and they accepted the opportunity with a
3-0 victory. All three goals came in the first half, Sam Kerr giving them the lead with Erin
Cuthbert adding the second and Guro Reiten making it three from the penalty spot.
Manchester City extended their winning run to five matches when they defeated
Everton 2-1. Julie Blakstad gave City a first half lead which was cancelled out just before
the break by Rikke Sevecke, before Khadija Shaw scored the decisive goal for Gareth Taylor’s
side four minutes into the second half.
Aston Villa survived an early scare to win 3-1 against Reading FC Women and
move back into fifth place. Lauren Wade gave Reading the lead in the seventh minute but
Villa hit back with two goals from Rachel Daly just ahead of half time and the England
international completed her hat-trick from the penalty spot with fourteen minutes left.
