Match Report
WELLINGTON A.F.C. 3 ASHTON &
BACKWELL UTD 2
The Stags travelled to south Somerset in a buoyant mood following 3 victories in
their last 3 games, notably a 4-0 win last Saturday against bottom of the table
Bridport. Then a very impressive mid-week Somerset Premier cup win vs
Southern League Premier Division Taunton Town, 5-4 on penalties after Jason
Radnidge had given Ashton & Backwell 65 minute lead, only for Taunton to be
th
th
awarded a dubious penalty in the 85 minute to equalise.
Perhaps the visitor’s minds were still 5 miles up the road in Taunton as Wellington
took the lead after 90 seconds as debutant Douglas Camilo’s pinpoint pass split
open the Backwell defence to pick out Miles Quick who slotted home from 15
yards into the far corner. That lead only lasted 7 minutes when Conner Saunders
made an important tackle 30 yards out from the home goal, his accurate pass
found Brad Skidmore whose left shot gave him his 5 goal of the season. Only
th
another 7 minutes passed when Wellington regained the lead as Jack Bown-
Porter crossed from the right, he found Jake Quick unmarked whose fierce drive
hit the underside of the cross bar and bounced over the line. Backwell equalised
again in the 27 minute through a Joe Bishop Penalty, awarded after Mason
th
Raymond had impeded the dangerous Conner Hartley. On the stroke of halftime,
Towler played in Jake Quick who beat the off side trap to round George
rd
Dorrington and put his side ahead for the 3 and final time.
It was the hosts who started the 2 45 minutes the stronger side, forcing
nd
Dorrington into a good low diving save from Miles Quick. Ashton & Backwell then
got a grip in midfield but couldn’t quite find the killer touch to level the scores for
a 3 time. Charlie Saunders had a long range header well saved, then a fantastic
rd
1 touch and turn from substitute Joel Bayliss saw his drive clip the top of the
st
cross bar. Sam Thomas went close with a header and the best chance of the half
fell to Hartley whose right foot shot was headed off the line by Raymond, to keep
Wellington’s 3-2 lead intact.
