TAUNTON TOWN 1 ASHTON & BACKWELL Utd 1
ASHTON & BACKWELL WON 5-4 ON PENALTIES
Tuesday, 5 October 2021 will go down in our club history, the night we beat a
TH
club 53 places higher than us in the FA pyramid. To put that in perspective, who
were 53 places above Taunton? BRISTOL ROVERS!
Look, we rode our luck, Taunton, who play in the Southern league Premier
division and sit in a play off position, dominated possession, Coomber had to
make 3-4 very good saves, the whole squad worked their socks off (I’ve had to
buy some more!) some great tackles and blocks. Perhaps the hosts best struck
attempts were actually off target, they probably didn’t work Lewis enough in
th
goal. But it wasn’t all one way, in the 19 minute Radders goal bound shot was
deflected onto the post. 4 minutes later the outstanding, in fact too outstanding!
Connor Hartley beat his full back to force a good save. Connor had a good appeal
for a penalty turned down as the full back brought him down again, the ref
judged it to be outside the box. We could all see differently. Half time 0-0
Radders had another shot just over but hit the target on the hour mark. Connor
Saunders made a great tackle just in the Taunton half, the ball ran loose, Radders
sweetly struck his low drive with his 1 touch, 35 yards from goal to beat the
st
keeper’s despairing dive, 1-0 to the STAGS. 2 mins later It was that man Radders
again who put the ball in the net only to see the Assistant flagging for offside.
With 15 mins. Left a great run on the by-line by Charlie Saunders, he pulled it
back for Radders but his effort went over when very well placed.
With 10 minutes left, the Peacocks were awarded a hotly disputed penalty as
Tomo was judged to trip lewington. Skipper Toby Holmes made no mistake from
the spot, 1-1. In the 86 min. Jordan Bishop made a great tackle on the half way
th
line to prevent a quick Town break. Just a shame it wasn’t rugby, with Jord’s hand
around the strikers ankle!! Yellow card. We actually finished the game in the
ascendency and had another blatant penalty denied in injury time as Tomo was
man handled to the ground attacking a corner. F/T 1-1
All 10 penalties were brilliant, credit to both sides. A&B heros were Connor
Saunders, Joe Bishop, Sam Thomas, Charlie Saunders, Brad Skidmore. Todd
Watts took Taunton’s 5 penalty and thundered it against the cross bar, queue
th
massive celebrations for the Stags.
