Why teach keyboarding skills
How should we teach Keyboarding skills?
(Classroom Management)
1- Keep practice times "short" to avoid extended sessions that raise anxiety. Students should practice a maximum of 15 minutes per day.
2- Set time aside each week for keyboarding instruction, just as would be done for handwriting instruction.
3- Hand position and correct posture at the keyboard need to be monitored.
4- Be sure to reinforce proper posture and technique anytime a student sits at a
computer in order to transfer skills outside the keyboarding program.
5- Teachers should reduce speed (WPM) and accuracy (raise lesson error threshold %)
requirements according to a student’s IPP for fine motor skills. Likewise, teachers should raise accuracy (raise Lesson Error Threshold Penalty) requirements for students who consistently exceed the established benchmarks.
6- Reinforce the usage of the shift key to capitalize.
7- Reinforce the usage of one space between words.
8- Reinforce the usage of one space after punctuations.
9- Reinforce the memorization of the finger names.
10- Reinforce the memorization of the location of each key.
11- Don’t put emphasis on accuracy and speed but focus on the Touch-Typing
technique.
Outcomes by Grade
Kindergarten
1- Students familiarize themselves with keyboarding terms (Keyboard, keys, spacebar, return, enter, backspace, arrows, delete, numbers and letters).
2- Students know the body posture (Eyes, body with the letter B, hands and wrists).
3- Students are using both hands on keyboard at all times.
4- Students familiarize themselves with the Home Row and can place fingers on it.
5- Students are expected to produce simple letters or words.
6- Students familiarize themselves with the keyboard and it’s functions.
Keyboarding and ICT Program of Study
F.1.1.2 apply terminology appropriate to the technologies being used at this division level F.1.1.3 demonstrate an understanding that the user manages and controls the outcomes of technology
F.1.2.2 identify and apply techniques and tools for communicating, storing, retrieving and selecting information
F.5.1.1 demonstrate proper posture when using a computer
F.5.1.2 demonstrate safe behaviour when using technology
F.5.2.1 demonstrate the application of ergonomics to promote personal health and well- being
F.5.2.2 identify and apply safety procedures required for the technology being used F.6.1.2 use proper keyboarding techniques for the home row, enter, space bar, tab, back- space, delete and insertion-point arrow keys
F.6.2.4 use appropriate keyboarding techniques for the alphabetic and punctuation keys
Research Facts:
1- Keyboarding is the most crucial computing skill.
2- Elementary students can learn to type using the Touch-Typing technique.
3- Students enhance their language arts and imagination capabilities.
4- It is essential that keyboarding skills be taught as early as possible.
5- Direct instruction and supervision will ensure the development of excellent
keyboarding skills.
6- Efficiency of learning increases when students know their rate of progress.
7- Distributed practice over short intervals is more effective in developing skills than
concentrated practice.
8- More a student is proficient at keyboarding more their attention span is increased as
well.
9- When using a keyboarding program the emphasis needs to be on the process before
the product. (Technique before accuracy and speed)
10- Children should learn to keyboard when they have a need to communicate.
