3.1 District Level Learning Resources Support
The District needs to review the potential of a District Level Library or Learning Resources Centre with respect to the District leadership and cost savings that can be available in the new and emerg- ing information technology areas.
3.1.1 Review the potential and feasibility of a District level Learning Resources
Centre for the facilitation of traditional, new and emerging technology initiatives, with an emphasis on cost savings to the District. By Jan. 2001!
Potential areas that may be included are: • Software licensing;
• Software duplication;
• Electronic Test Banks;
• Electronic preview; and
• Administration of such partnerships as the Central Alberta Media Services
Centre (CAMS).
3.2 School Level Learning Resources and Library Support
The District and schools need to review the future direction of their school libraries and how they will fit in the future with respect to traditional, new and emerging information and communication technologies.
3.2.1 The role of school libraries will be reviewed with respect to future directions for traditional, new and emerging information and communication technologies. By Mar. 2001
3.2.2 The role and responsibilities of Library Technicians will be reviewed to accommodate tradi- tional, new and emerging information and communication technologies. By Mar. 2001
3.3 District Library Automation Program
The District will provide support and long term direction to schools for library automation. Library automation and questions about Year 2000 compatibility, appropriate hardware, software replace- ment and electronically linking all library collections in the future must be addressed.

3.4 Software Standards, Licensing and Bulk Purchasing
The District will have standards, licensing and bulk purchasing for the efficient and cost effective acquisition of information and communication technologies.
3.4.1 An Electronic Learning Resource Preview Centre (Computer Software and Online Re- sources) will be established as a service of the District Resource Centre to provide opportunities for the preview of computer software and teachers online resources both on site in the District Re- source Centre and at the school level. 3.4.2 A process and procedure will be developed by the District Resource Centre for the pre- view and evaluation of electronic learning resources (software and online resources) which support technology programs. By Jan. 2002
3.4.3 The District will participate as a partner in Alberta Learning volume and/or licensing pur- chasing agreements for software products as appropriate. Ongoing
3.4.4 The District will negotiate bulk licensing and software agreements with vendors where ap- propriate for school based administrative, instructional and educational software products as ap- propriate. Ongoing
Premier's Award of Excellence - Bronze
The Emerge One-to-One Laptop Learning Initiative project team received a Bronze award for its work in planning and implementing Emerge, a three-year research initiative that investigated the use of laptops in learning and teaching.
