 • Client software should be loaded on the Macintosh computers to allow staff and students to access file storage areas on the Novell servers.
• Technical Support staff should undertake some Apple training and seminars.
• Utilization of software like Mac OS X Server, Apple Network Administrator Toolkit, and the Macintosh Manager or At Ease for Workgroups should be implemented to manage and maintain the Macintosh computers.
4.4.3 Every school has an identical server with Novell, and the potential to share CD’s over the network. All servers are the same, feature set similar, and hardware identical. This allows very easy administration, and easy problem solving. Improvements could be achieved by maintaining the standard server practice, continue the upgrades to Novell 5 and stock spare parts for these servers. By Jan. 2001
4.4.4 All donated computer hardware and software will be consistent with the District Hardware and Software Standards, where appropriate. By Dec. 2000
4.4.5 Hardware and software standards for computer operating systems, network software, security software and telecommunications software will be developed on a regular basis, where appropriate. By Dec. 2000
4.5 Intranet Development
An Intranet (NOTE: different from an Internet) is a collection of private Web sites that are available only to employees, or other trusted parties, within an organization. An Intranet site could be used to im- prove communications and provide for electronic publication and distribution of District documents.
4.5.1 The District will explore the potential, needs and feasibility of developing a District Intranet. By Apr. 2001
4.6 Information Disaster Plan
One of the most gratifying things we saw, during the visitations to all school and District Offices, was that every file server had a backup system. The tapes were not always changed every day, but by and large backups were done on a regular basis. This is commendable, as many school systems do not have
regular backups, in fact many organizations don’t have regular backups.
4.6.1 Disaster recovery includes not only the files on file servers, but access to them. All passwords should be written down and placed in a safety deposit box.
These password lists should be regularly, that is monthly, updated, and new copies placed in the safety deposit box. Full documentation of the following should be completed immediately. This is an extremely high priority. By Jan. 2001
4.7 Reclaim, Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle
The District will have guidelines for the appropriate use, recycling and/or disposal of old or obsolete computer and other information technologies.
4.7.1 The District will determine a minimum standard for the technical support and servicing of old or obsolete computer technology and other information technologies and communicate to schools each year the service and support for such equipment that will not be provided. By Jan. 2001
4.7.2 The District will be responsible for evaluating, redistributing, recycling and discarding old or obsolete computer technology that has been designated as discarded by schools or District Departments. By Jan. 2001
4.8 District Level Technical Support Responsibilities
The District will assume responsibility for District level technical support to Schools and District Depart- ments. Technical support services require improvements and a move into a more proactive mode of operations that includes: planning, scheduling, monitoring, evaluating and budgeting in advance.
4.8.1 Provide District Level Technical Support in the area of Network Technical Support, including areas such as: Ongoing
• the District Wide Area
Network.
