 REVIEW AND AUDIT
OF
HARDWARE, SOFTWARE AND
NETWORK INFRASTRUCTURE
1. Introduction and Achievements
This document is a detailed look at the hardware, software and network in- frastructure within the Lakeland R.C.S.S. District. The many positive aspects and accomplishments of technology are reviewed, what is currently in place is described, and what the District staff perceive as the future.
The District is made up of six schools, District Offices, a Tech Shop, and a Maintenance Department. There is also a small sub-office in Cold Lake, and a Vendor Office in Cold Lake which serves as a central point for the Wide Area Net- work (WAN) in Cold Lake, and houses some District equipment. The latter two re- ceive a partial mention in this document, while the first nine sites are the primary focus.
Some of the major District technology achievements include a:
• full scale enterprise WAN, which is nearly complete; • standard software for student records;
• standard software for Library automation;
• Local Area Networks (LANs) in every school site;
• standard file services in every site;
• standard manufacturer for all printers in all sites;
• standard manufacturer for all hubs and switches in all sites; • satellite Internet feed;
• proxy Servers in every site;
• standard back up system for each Server;
• centralized technical support infrastructure;
• centralized technology purchasing and planning;
• Internet accessibility to all staff; and
• District Director of Technology Services with a wide range of
experience and skill to help lead the District.
The majority of this document contains examples, solutions, and recommen- dations based on information gained while visiting each site, and interviewing
each of the technical department staff, including the Director of Technology Serv- ices, and the two full-time Technicians.
In addition, the document includes a review of the implementation of the many existing technologies, some of the strengths and weaknesses in the systems and what should be looked at as future improvement options.
Finally, this document outlines a number of recommendations with respect to all areas of the physical technology and infrastructure, that should help in planning for the future.
