2.2 Ecole Notre Dame High School
The review indicated:
• WAN Connectivity - Paradyne Hotwire modem.
• Five network drops per room
•Server Closet is a locked room on the gym stage. Very secure.
•Contains a Novell Server running Netware 5, an NT 4 Server running the Proxy Server software, and potentially the E-Mail server. There is a central switch con- necting all the 10/100 hubs together.
•Classrooms generally have a single teacher workstation, running Windows 95 or 98, Office 97/2000, and other software. Lock down is done only on new machines which are running ZENWorks.
• A disk image has been setup by the technical support staff, but it is very limited, in that much customization has to be done after the image is loaded.
•Many 486’s in Math and Science rooms which are not connected to the network or even plugged into power outlets. Simply collecting dust, and not being used. •Lab #1 has 18 older workstations. Pentium 100’s, with 16Mof RAM, and a CD- ROM drive. Some of the network cables in the Lab are non-functional, and most of the computers are non-functional. The room is served by two 16 port 10/100 hubs.
•Lab #2 has approximately 24 computers, connected to the network via two 16 port 10/100 hubs. These machines are Pentium II 233 machines with 32mb of RAM, and CD-ROM drives. Two high-end workstations are also available running software such as Adobe Photoshop and connected to a scanner. There is an Optra S 1250
•Laser Printer in this room connected to a D-Link Printer Server. This classroom also has a Proxima 5800 Digital Video Projector. Hubs in this room are in an un- locked cabinet above one of the workstations.
•The Office has five workstations. They are Pentium 100’s with 16mb
of RAM and Windows 95, with an Optra N network printer.
•The school has a Sony Mavica Digital Camera.
•The Library has:a 10/100 D-Link hub connecting the Library workstations to the school network:
• six computers for general student use, running
• Windows 95; and
• a LexMark Optra 1250N Laser Printer with built-in network card.
Recommendations:
1. Set standard software for the school, based on District standards. All worksta- tions in the school should be running the same
operating system and the same software.
2. The 486 computers should be setup and connected to the
network. They can be used as Internet browsing machines, plain word processors, e-mail computers, Library access computers, or even specific uses like Math soft- ware, or science software. While old, these machines should not be wasted.
3. Wiring in the school must be fixed up so that every network drop works, espe- cially in the Labs.
4. Lab #1 must be completely overhauled to ensure that every computer is work- ing. In addition, each computer should have some manner of lockdown software installed to prevent unauthorized use.
5. Lab #2 needs a new locking cupboard for its hub storage.
