The review indicated:
•The Server Closet is in the Library storage room. It contains an NT Server and a Novell File Server. The Server Closet is not at all secure. Anyone can enter and re- move or damage equipment.
•The WAN connection is via a Paradyne Hotwire ADSL modem
•The Office has two workstations, Pentium 100 class computers, connected to an Optra R+ which is using NetBeui to network. The Counselor’s office has a worksta- tion and a laser printer.
•The Computer Lab is a Mac lab. All Macs are connected via LocalTalk PhoneNet wiring. The Lab has approximately 27 workstations, with two LaserWriter 16/600 printers. There is no Ethernet connectivity in the room. All the machines are using At Ease, and various kids software. Models include LC II’s, LC 475’s, and 580’s. •The classrooms generally have 6 ethernet drops, with one computer acting as a teacher workstation. This workstation tends to be a Pentium 100 class computer. •The Library has:
•six workstations, all Pentium 100/’s, connected to a networked LexMark Optra S 1250 Laser Printer, which is used by the entire school; and there is also a LexMark 7200 Colour Inkjet printer for general use, but specifically intended for special pro- jects and digital camera work.
Recommendations:
1. In the future, eliminate the ADSL WAN connection. The school is on the same property as the Central Office, so the most economical and useful solution would be to trench fibre underneath the playground all the way to Central Office. This would allow potentially much faster and cheaper access in
the long run WAN connectivity.
2. The Server Closet needs to be moved to a secure location that is not easily accessible, and is locked 24 hours per day.
3. Every Macintosh should have an Ethernet card installed and connected to the school network. They could then utilize the Novell server for file storage, and act as Internet web browsers. Additionally, in the future they could also connect
to the Library Automation system. The LocalTalk network should be completely removed, and replaced with Ethernet.
4. The two most powerful laser printers in the school are sitting, virtually idle, in the Lab. These two LaserWriter 16/600 printers will print at up to 16 pages per minute, with good
quality, from any platform. They could be redistributed throughout the school, and better access could then be made. They should be connected to the Ethernet network,
and made available to all.
