 2.6 Mackenzie River Elementary School
The review indicated:
•The Office has four computers, running Windows 95. All connected to an Optra R+ laser printer.
•The current Internet connection is a 56K line to the Internet, shared with WinGate software.
•The WAN link is wireless via Breezecom.
•The Server Closet is in the counselor’s room, and is not secure. In fact, comput- ers can be seen by anyone in the room.
•The Lab is made up of 30 Macintosh computers. Models are mostly LC 475s. The network is PhoneNet based LocalTalk. There is LaserWriter 12/640ps printer on the network, as well as a StyleWriter Pro Colour Inkjet printer. Plans are for the Lab to be replaced with 30 Wintel based PC’s, a LexMark Optra S 1625 laser printer, and a LexMark Optra 45N Colour printer.
•Each classroom has 6 ethernet drops. There is one computer with a Canon BJC- 240 inkjet printer in each classroom.
•The school has a Proxima projector.
•The Wireless WAN link comes into the Lab and is hanging from the roof inside an unlocked cabinet.
•The Library has;
•six Pentium 100 workstations; and
•printing is sent to a Hewlett Packard LaserJet 5P printer, which is connected via a parallel cable to the librarian’s workstation and shared with
the rest of the network.
Recommendations:
1. The Library laser printer needs an Ethernet card installed and connected properly to the network.
2. The Server Closet needs to be moved for security reasons, or made more secure.
3. The Macintosh computers should all have Ethernet cards installed, thus making them available on the network, for use as Internet web browsers, word processors, etc. These machines have many years of life left in them and should be utilized wherever possible. The LaserPrinter is a very high-end model, and should be connected to the Ethernet network as any platform can print to it.
4. The inkjet printers should be removed from the school, and perhaps a single laser printer could be setup on each floor for shared use by all classrooms.
