The Mystery of Christmas
Dear Friends,
It will soon be Christmas, the time of year when we are encouraged
by the Media to eat and drink more, buy presents, dress up and
generally to eat, drink and be merry. We may do this, to some
extent, but for Christians the secret is in the name : Christmas.
At Christmas we are faced with the great mystery of our faith that
God came down to this world in the person of Jesus. Our great
creator was born in a humble dwelling, surrounded by animals and
with an earthly family.
Churches are good at following the caring example of Jesus when
we raise money for charity, feed the lonely, run social events and
generally care for others. But unless we have the awe and wonder
of the shepherds travelling to Bethlehem, after hearing the angels'
message, we have somewhat missed the point.
God came to earth as a helpless baby to save the world that he
loved. This is the mystery and message of Christmas this year and
every year.
