P. 5
to share the love of God in a way that does not cause offense or
drive people away.
Pentecost is the time when we remember the coming of the Holy
Spirit, and it is also the time when we remember how the Holy Spirit
both encourages and enables us to fulfil our mission. Each of us
has a part to play in seeking to build God’s kingdom and each of us
are given gifts and abilities to use in that work. All we need do is
follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we seek to respond to all
that God asks of us.
This hymn, by Marjorie Dobson, speaks of the different roles that
we can each fulfil, while also recognising that we should be
opening ourselves up to the Holy Spirit and not placing limits on
what we can, or will, do.
Lord, you call us to your service,
each in our own way.
Some to caring, loving, healing;
some to preach, or pray;
some to work with quiet learning,
truth discerning,
day by day.
Life for us is always changing
in the work we share.
Christian love adds new dimensions
to the way we care.
For we know that you could lead us,
as you need us,
anywhere.
Seeing life from your perspective
makes your challenge plain,
as your heart is grieving over
those who live in pain.
Teach us how, by our compassion,
we may fashion
hope again.
