The Light of the World: Hope
Then the old woman spoke of the birth, the joy, the hope and the
promise. She stared into the fire and as we strained to hear she asked

‘Mary did you see the rejection, the thorns, the cross, the pain and the

ultimate sacrifice that was to come as you journeyed with your son –
maybe you had a sense of the overwhelming miracle of the empty tomb
and the promise of eternal life which was given for the whole of creation.
That hope that your son was to bring was, not just for individuals but for
the whole creation, not just for humans but for the whole creation, not
just for future history but for all history. A hope was that beyond
measure; holistic, inclusive, encompassing everything.’
The fire was dying and it was time to go. We longed for more. The old
woman was tiring. She gathered her belongings having again filled our
hearts with inspiration and hope, but as she shuffled away, she turned
towards us, her parting words were…
