Amongst the least helpful steps are to rush into written self-justification or into resignation from a post
of responsibility.
The Quaker nominations and appointments process has no equal. Both aspects are, in theory at least, the
responses of a rightly ordered group of Friends meeting in the spirit of worship. Some see them as
nothing less than a call from God to use our gifts in the service of our community. To walk away from
these on a matter of principle – or pique – is to deny those possibly unique and God-given gifts to the
Meeting.
To seek fault in those appointed by this process is to demonstrate lack of trust in the spiritual integrity of
those appointed to work on our behalf in key roles.
Quakers are not good at facing up to the frictions that are inevitable in any group of fellow travellers. Our
experience has resulted in a number of suggestions for conflict resolution, not all of which are easy. It is,
however, worth trying these before asking to be released from a role on the grounds that the behaviour
of others has made it untenable.
It is said that we are all children of God. Sometimes we can act like children…
To ask for help is a sign of wisdom rather than weakness.
It is not for the comfort of our souls that we are Quakers but for their strengthening.
These are a long way from being the same thing.
Though the former may provide personal benefit it is the latter that is more likely to result in good for
others.
i.‘God’ – a convenient analogy, metaphor or poetic abbreviation for the light, life, spirit, truth or good that
is outside human experience and beyond human understanding.
Tends to confusion if used lightly.
2. Traditionally, Quakers don’t resign. They ask to be released, which is a different process altogether.
