Thinking
about Lent
Dear Friends,
Lent is the season when we remember Jesus' time in the desert
prior to His mission. We think of His struggles not to take the easy
way, to commit Himself to His Father's work and the suffering to
come. It's traditionally a time of prayer, abstinence and alms giving.
In the URC we don't have any strict rules about Lenten observance
but many of us do use the weeks up to the celebration of Easter as
a period of reflection.
Every year I wonder what can I do for Lent ? In the past I have
given up chocolate or some other treat. I think this is valid if it
brings me back to thinking of Jesus suffering hunger in the
Wilderness. However, sometimes I would like to do something
more active, rather than removing something.
I could look at my prayer life, perhaps being more disciplined to
pray at a certain time. Or I might try a form of prayer which is more
meditative, just sitting and listening to God. Another way to pray is
to read a bible passage, and concentrate on any word or words
which seem to speak to me.
I might look at my charity giving and perhaps see how I could
improve it. Certainly supporting our Lent Lunch in aid of
Commitment for Life is a useful thing to do.
Maybe Lent is a time for me to remember a friend or relative who I
find difficult and give them a ring, or invite them for a cup of tea.
And how about praying for people I really don't like? That's a hard
one isn't it?
What do you do for Lent? I would love to hear your suggestions.
Every blessing Janet
