Heaven’s arches rang The foxes found rest,
       when the angels sang, and the birds their nest,

       proclaiming Thy royal degree;       in the shade of the cedar-tree;
       but of lowly birth but Thy couch was the sod,
       cam’st Thou, Lord, on earth, O Thou Son of God,
       and in great humility:              in the deserts of Galilee;
       O come to my heart Lord Jesus, O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
       There is room in my heart for Thee. there is room in my heart for Thee

       Thou camest, O Lord, When heaven’s arches ring,
       with the living word and her choirs shall sing,
       that should set Thy people free; at Thy coming to victory,
       but with mocking scorn, let Thy voice call me home,
       and with crown of thorn, saying, ‘Yet there is room,
       they bore Thee to Calvary: there is room at my side for thee!’
       O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, And my heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus,
       Thy cross is my only plea. when Thou comest and calmest for me.

       This glorious hymn was the work of a very talented woman. She
       was the daughter of the Revd Edward Bishop Elliott the incumbent
       at St. Marks Church, Brighton. Her name was Emily Steele Elliott.
       She was noted for her hymns, poetry and novels. She also edited
       several magazines. But over and above this she unstintingly gave
       herself to helping the poor, and, in particular poor children - this
       hymn was really written for children, but such was its acclaim by
       adults on its publication that it has become an all-time favourite.

       Let’s just look at the hymn. You will notice that apart from the last
       stanza each verse begins with a statement. Then on the forth line it
       begins ‘But.’ So first we have something positive said about the
       Lord Jesus. Then something negative, harsh, ugly and wicked! Yet
       your response and mine can be: “O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
       there is room in my heart for Thee.”
