Lessons Sarah Early

This virus is a lesson for us,
A lesson in our shared humanity,
A humanity we share with the global South.

Why should we be able to relax and plan our 100th birthday?
When many children still don’t make it past their 10th?

What have we done to earn this?
Nothing. It’s simply an accident of birth.

This government is a lesson for us, too.
A blow to any possible feelings of cultural superiority.

So many peoples of the world
Suffer under corrupt and incompetent governments.
Gaza —- Brazil —- Myanmar —- Afghanistan.

Well, now we in Britain can appreciate their feelings.
We now share just a tiny fraction of their suffering.

Not too much, since we still have roads and schools and hospitals.

But a useful hint of that chaos.

Would it not be wonderful if this opened some closed minds?

Just a little?
