GOD BE WITH YOU TILL WE MEET AGAIN

A dictionary can be very useful at times, can’t it! In 1882 Jeremiah
Rankin, minister of the First Congregational Church in Washington,
D.C. wanted to know what the meaning of Good-bye was. He
wanted a hymn for his choir to sing each week to close their
meeting. On looking it up in his well thumbed dictionary he was
surprised to find it meant “God be with you.” So every time
someone called out to a friend on parting, “Good-bye” they were
really saying, “God be with you” - though, of course, they might not
know it!

From this information came the following hymn:

God be with you till we meet again;
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep in love enfold you;
God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet,
Till we meet at Jesus’ feet;
Till we meet, till we meet,
God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again;
‘Neath His wings protecting hide you,
Daily manna still divide you,
God be with you till we meet again. (Refrain)

God be with you till we meet again;
When life’s perils thick confound you,
Put His arms unfailing round you,
God be with you till we meet again. (Refrain)

God be with you till we meet again;
Keep love’s banner floating o’er you,
Smite death’s threatening wave before you,
God be with you till we meet again. (Refrain)
