TO PROVIDE AN IDEA of the level of devotion
dedicated to each of the 150 Black Badge
models Rolls-Royce produces annually,
consider this: four years of development
went into the 21-inch carbon composite
wheels. Making use of aerospace-grade
aluminum and titanium bolts, each one
takes a full week to manufacture.
Debuting in 2016, the Black Badge series—
consisting of the Wraith, Dawn, and
Ghost—have drawn a new type of buyer to
Rolls-Royce; one that is on average 20 years
younger. This is despite the Black Badge
models commanding a 15% premium over
their more colorful counterparts.
In typical Rolls-Royce fashion, the
individual changes made to these iterations
are subtle and elegant, yet make a
pronounced statement when taken as a total
package. All traditional brightwork has been
swapped for black chrome, including the air
inlets of the massive grill and retractable
Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament. Inside, the
woven carbon fiber dashboard replaces the
expected natural wood, while 1,300 fiber
optic strands in the headliner resemble a
glistening starry night.
Increases in horsepower and torque have
been made across the model range, and each
receives a brand-new 8-speed transmission.
A 624 horsepower V12 engine combined
with a 642 lb. ft. of torque, in the Wraith’s
case, make it the most powerful car Rolls-
Royce has ever built—allowing it to glide
effortlessly to 60mph in only 4.1 seconds.
