Toriano Adaryll "Tito" Jackson
15 October 1953 - 15 September 2024
Tito Jackson was a founding member of the Jackson 5 (later
known as the Jacksons), who rose to fame in the late 1960s
and 1970s with the Motown label and later had continued
success with the group on the Epic label in the late 1970s
and 1980s.
Tito began a solo career in 2003 performing as a blues musician.
Throughout his career, he was nominated
for three Grammy Awards and was
inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame as a member of the Jackson 5.
In 2003 Tito began a solo career as a blues
musician and produced an excellent
album, “Under Your Spell” which featured
collaborations with an array of superlative
special guests, including soul legend Stevie
Wonder, jazz legend George Benson, rock
guitarist Joe Bonamassa, (who featured on
the title track) Grady Champion, his
brother Marlon Jackson, Claudette King,
The O'Jay's Eddie Levert, Kenny Neal,
Steven Powell and Bobby Rush.
LISTEN TO ‘UNDER YOUR SPELL’
Pete Feenstra writing in “Get Ready To Rock” called it “…a broad based album that
beguiles smoulders and ultimately convinces.”
There is little doubt that the world has lost an outstanding musician who was quite
capable of holding his own in the company of top-flight blues musicians, bringing to the
leading edge of popular music (the ‘fruits’, as Willie Dixon called it) exemplified by
Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, the roots of all popular music ‘the blues’.
Tito and his wife Delores "Dee Dee" Martes who he married at the age of 18, were
divorced in 1988. Dee Dee was found dead floating in a swimming pool in 1994. The
death was originally ruled accidental. Later, Los Angeles businessman Donald Bohana
was charged with and, in 1998, found guilty of second-degree murder.
The couple had three sons—Taj (born 1973), Taryll (born 1975), and TJ (born 1978)—
who comprise the R&B/pop group 3T. Jackson had nine grandchildren.
