BiTS: Let's talk a minute or two about Gatemouth Brown. There are a couple of tracks, I think on
the album, ‘You Got Money’ and I believe you did ‘Boogie Uproar’ as well from Gatemouth.
DR: Yes, that's true.
BiTS: Why did you choose those tracks?
DR: They're just ones I liked. They're just ones that were
always favourites of mine, especially ‘Boogie Uproar’, and
the fun thing about it is that I'm older now and my chops
aren’t what they were when I cut it 20 years ago. So I'm not
even positive that I could play it now, but I'm glad that I got
it on record because that was a really strong time period
for me. Not that now isn't, but your physical things just
change. I play a little different than I did. Maybe a little more
thoughtful or more melodic, and I can't play as fast as I
could back then.
BiTS: [Laughing] Tell me something about the other
musicians that you've got on the album.
DR: Well, a lot of them are still with me that were with me
back then. Let's see, Mark Teixeira on the drums, has been
with me for, geez, probably 25 years now, and the bass
player Marty Ballou has been in and out of my band over
the years for many, many, many decades, and he's the bass Gatemouth Brown
player.
BiTS: What about the horn section?
DR: Doug James is the primary horn player and then we have Pamela Murray on trombone on
this particular album and it worked out to be a good sound because of the trombone and baritone
tenor. Doug plays both baritone and tenor, so the sound of the trombone really suits the music for
this album which has some influence of New Orleans style music in some of it. Then we had several
other horn players on a couple of songs too, on ‘Boogie Uproar’ and then let's see, a tune of mine,
‘Just Kiss Me’, which is an old blues tune of mine, that like a lot of tunes on this album, I had written
for Roomful of Blues, but they had never gotten recorded by Roomful of Blues.
BiTS: That suggests to me that you've got a kind of horde of unplayed music, so to speak, the stuff
that you've written that has never seen the light of day.
DR: Well, some of it hadn't, that's true. Some of it had previously on other records, like in the trio
format. A lot of my songs I rearranged to be a little more rock and roll oriented, and I recorded as
a trio, like ‘Just Kiss Me’ I recorded it as a trio originally. It was meant to have at least four horns
on it, but it worked great as a trio vehicle. People loved it. It was always a great live song. So adding
the horn section to it made it sound like what I meant it to sound like originally.
BiTS: That's terrific. This album is out, I think at the end of August. Is that right? Is that on both
sides of the Atlantic?
DR: Yeah, yeah. I believe so. I believe it's coming out worldwide at the same time, but I can't swear
that, but I think it is.
BiTS: Well, unfortunately I'm at a disadvantage because I've only been able to hear snatches of
