EVERYBODY NEEDS LOVE
THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF EDDIE HINTON
By Bruce Schurman
AUSTIN MACAULEY PUBLISHERS 2024 / 294pp
Review by Bob Pearce
It’s quite possible that you’ve never heard of Eddie Hinton or his music. It was the late Bill Rowe
who introduced me to this man many
moons ago by including a few tracks on a
cassette tape, I believe they’re known as
‘mix tapes’.
We would exchange cassettes on regular
occasions, the tapes would contain our
latest ‘favourites’, be they blues, soul or
gospel.
After reading this book I now know that
Eddie Hinton was much more than just a
singer and guitarist whose main love was
blues and R&B music and those who sang
it, he also played drums, piano and
harmonica, wrote songs and produced
recording sessions. His songs have been
recorded by Percy Sledge, Dusty
Springfield and many others, his guitar
playing can be heard on numerous tracks
from Cher to Johnnie Taylor.
Because much of Eddie’s story centers
around Muscle Shoals and the studios
there, this book would also make a good
companion to “Memphis Boys” (Roben
Jones, 2010).
Bruce Schurman has provided so much
information here and produced an
excellent account of the life of Eddie
Hinton, a man who lived for music. It
includes Discography and Session Work
lists. Ultimately though, it’s a very sad
story of a man many referred to as a musical genius.
