Colin James—Chasing The Sun—Stony Plain Records
Colin James is a blues-rocker based in Vancouver Canada and
“Chasing The Sun” will be his 21st album no less!
The album opens with ‘Protection’ a steady blues rocker that
features Lucinda Williams with her distinctive vocal sound.
‘I’m Still Alive’ is a lush minor blues with some Albert King
style guitar licks thrown in. ‘Devilment’ is a nice rocking blues
featuring the unmistakable sound of Charlie Musselwhite on
harmonica. Things slow down a little with ‘Crystal Ball’ whilst
‘How It Feels To Be Loved’ has that laid back soul feel to it,
almost bordering Al Green territory.
‘Star Studded Sky’ glides along nicely before things slow down with ‘Too Far Gone’. ‘In My Own
Dream’ is a slow blues but ‘This Song Kills Hate’ is a rocker that has a big guitar and solid snare
drum sound, almost like The Who meets ZZ Top! There is a nice acoustic blues feel to ‘Come To
Find Out’ with some more top class harp work from Charlie Musselwhite before the album
closes with the haunting ‘Open Your Mind’.
This album is well produced and the songs are well constructed with good solid instrumenta-
tion throughout. Colin has got a good all round voice and his guitar work is superb with great
tone and good control. This album is definitely enhanced by the appearance of Lucinda Wil-
liams and Charlie Musselwhite who really add something special to the music. This is a fine
album and I recommend you give it a spin.

da. ‘Tears For A Friend’ is a rock guitar instrumental and ‘Soft Shoe Shuffle’ as the name
