Acknowledgments
We are grateful to the teachers and students who use Basic English Grammar and have provided
critical feedback. They let us know what works best for them and how we can better suit their
educational needs in a changing market. We are indebted as well to the following reviewers and
focus group participants for their invaluable observations: Luke Anh, Houston Community College;
Roseanna Bird, Approach International Student Center; David Crooks, Houston Community
College; Liza Daily, Houston Community College; Jeffrey Kamm, Houston Community College;
Jill Lynch, Houston Community College; Sirje Russell, Tidewater Community College; Andrea
Silva; English Language Center; Cynthia Schuemann, Miami Dade Community College; Geneva
Tesh, Houston Community College; Joy Tesh, Houston Community College; and Melissa Villamil,
Houston Community College.
The Fifth Edition of Basic English Grammar reflects the talented assistance of three dedicated
individuals. Janice Baillie, who has been the production editor for the Azar-Hagen Grammar Series
since 2005, drew upon her encyclopedic knowledge to meticulously edit thousands of manuscript
pages and deftly track a mind-boggling number of details. We have benefited from the expertise of
Barbara Lyons, development editor, since 2014. Her gifted editing, creativity, and sense of style can
be seen in every chart and exercise. Mary Rich, Content Owner, recently joined our project and has
brought a wealth of experience to the oversight of the Student Book and ancillaries.
The series would not be complete without the expertise of our supplement writers: Geneva
Tesh, Houston Community College, for the Workbook, MyEnglishLab, and PowerPoint lessons;
Scott Tesh, for the design, development, and narration of the PowerPoints; Kelly Roberts Weibel,
Edmonds Community College, for the Test Bank; and Martha Hall, New England School of
English, for the Teacher’s Guide. They each bring years of teaching and writing experience to their
respective projects.
We would like to thank Sue Van Etten, our business manager, who skillfully oversaw a multitude of
complex issues related to the creation of the Fifth edition.
We are indebted to Don Williams at Page Designs International for the fresh, stylish design
and layout of the Fifth Edition. He has our enthusiastic thanks. We are also grateful to Warren
Fischbach, Senior Visual Designer at Pearson, for his valuable insights and suggestions. Our
appreciation goes to Aptara for the new art that brightens our pages and to Don Martinetti and
Chris Pavely for illustrations from previous editions.
We once again had our extraordinary team at Pearson Education to oversee the entire revision: Amy
McCormick, Product Manager, and Robert Ruvo, Senior Content Producer. We treasure Amy’s
incomparable vision, attention to detail, and passion for the series. We thank Rob for masterfully
juggling the schedule, production, and delivery of this edition with precision and unfailing
professionalism.
We are, as always, grateful for the encouragement and support from our families. How fortunate
we are!
